Picture this scene: It’s really coming down out there. The amount of rain has progressed from “cats and dogs” through “torrential” all the way to “Biblical proportions.” Meanwhile, you’re curled up on the couch, grateful that the rain is outside and you are inside, that you have warmth and light and dryness, and that you can hear the sump pump cycle on from time to time, an almost soothing hum breaking through the relentless pounding of the rain on the roof.

And then the power goes out.

Whether this is a minor inconvenience or a hugely expensive disaster depends mostly on one thing: whether or not you have a backup sump pump.
